BCEIA Consultant Appointed to the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews

On July 1, 2019, His Holiness Pope Francis appointed the Most Rev. Edward B. Scharfenberger, Bishop of Albany and consultant to the Bishop's Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs, consultant to the Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews.

The Diocese of Albany has released a statement.

Originally from Brooklyn, NY, Bishop Scharfenberger was ordained to the priesthood in 1973. He was ordained to the episcopacy and installed as bishop in the Diocese of Albany in 2014.

The Holy See's Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews was established in 1974 by Pope Paul VI. It is responsible for two standing dialogues between the the Holy See and the international Jewish community: the International Liaison Committee and the dialogue with the Chief Rabbinate of Israel. It has also produced several documents directing reflection on Jewish-Catholic relations.
